Powder Coat Preparation

Sand Blasting

IronShield’s indoor and climate-controlled facility includes a painting and blasting booth that is 20’ x 10’ x 12’. They use sand for all their blasting clean, smooth and prepare their project materials. During the blasting process, sand particles are shot out of the sandblaster and hit across the object’s surface at high speeds, scouring the surface.

Etching

To prepare metal for powder coating, IronShield first rinses the metal, degreases it, rinses it again and then etches it. They use phosphate etching to improve the adhesion of the powder to the metal. Materials like aluminum can be very slick and will need a little extra help to keep the powder coat adhered. Phosphate etching also significantly improves the corrosion resistance to ensure that your newly powder coated item is resistant to rusting and will stay in near-new condition.

Powder Coating

Powder coating is IronShield’s specialty. It is a form of dry coating that is applied electrostatically and then cured in a large oven under high heats to turn the dry powder into an opaque, durable shell. Powder coating is ideal of metal items, but can also be used on other materials that can conduct a charge and also endure high heats. Powder coating is very popular for use on large items like car bodies, down to small items like tire rims and door handles.

Liquid Coating

Liquid coating is a broad category and can be used for many different coating applications. It can be applied aired or airlessly to many different surfaces, including wood, plastic, metal and glass. IronShield’s booth is 20’ x 10’ x 12’, which is large enough to handle architectural screening, automobile frames and other large items.
